🌸 What is Ovulation?

Ovulation is the phase of the menstrual cycle in which a mature egg (ovum) is released from the ovary. The egg travels down the fallopian tube toward the uterus, where it can be fertilized by a sperm cell. If fertilization does not occur within approximately 12–24 hours, the egg dissolves and is shed during the next menstrual period, which arrives approximately 14 days after ovulation.

The fertile window is the period during the cycle when pregnancy is possible. It spans 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. This window exists because sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days. The two peak days of fertility are the day before ovulation and the ovulation day, when conception rates reach 25–30% per cycle for a healthy couple under 35.

The timing of ovulation varies with cycle length but can be estimated reliably with one key insight: ovulation typically occurs 14 days before the next period, not 14 days after the last one. This means for a 28-day cycle, ovulation is on day 14. For a 35-day cycle, it is on day 21 (35−14). For a 21-day cycle, it is on day 7 (21−14). This is the Luteal Phase Constant, a reliable physiological observation.

Physical signs of ovulation include changes in cervical mucus (becoming clear, slippery, and stretchy like raw egg white), a slight rise in basal body temperature (BBT), mild one-sided pelvic cramping (mittelschmerz), and a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) detectable with ovulation predictor kits (OPKs). Tracking multiple signs together gives the most accurate picture.

📐 Ovulation Date Formula

Ovulation Day = LMP + (Cycle Length − 14)
LMP = First day of the Last Menstrual Period
Cycle Length = Days from first day of one period to first day of the next
−14 = Luteal phase duration (constant at ~14 days for most women)
Fertile Window = [Ovulation − 5 days] to [Ovulation Day]
Next Period = LMP + Cycle Length
Peak fertility: 1–2 days before ovulation (sperm meets egg within hours)
Sperm viability: up to 5 days in the reproductive tract

📖 How to Use This Calculator

Step-by-Step

1
Enter the first day of your last period — the first day of bleeding, not the last day. This is the anchor point for the calculation.
2
Set your average cycle length. Count the days from the start of one period to the start of the next. Track the last 3 months and average if it varies.
3
Click Calculate to see ovulation date, fertile window, and the next 3 cycles. Mark these dates on your calendar or phone for planning.

💡 Example Calculations

Example 1 — Standard 28-Day Cycle

LMP: April 1, 2026 · Cycle: 28 days

1
Ovulation = April 1 + (28 − 14) = April 1 + 14 = April 15, 2026
2
Fertile Window = April 10 to April 15 (5 days before ovulation + ovulation day)
Ovulation: April 15 · Fertile Window: April 10–15 · Next period: April 29

Example 2 — Long 35-Day Cycle

LMP: March 15, 2026 · Cycle: 35 days

1
Ovulation = March 15 + (35 − 14) = March 15 + 21 = April 5, 2026
2
Fertile Window = March 31 to April 5
Ovulation: April 5 · Fertile Window: March 31 – April 5 · Next period: April 19

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

When do I ovulate?+
Ovulation typically occurs 14 days before your next expected period, regardless of cycle length. For a standard 28-day cycle, this is day 14. For a 32-day cycle, ovulation is around day 18 (32 − 14 = 18). For a 24-day cycle, ovulation is around day 10. The formula is: Ovulation Day = Cycle Length − 14 days before next period.
What is the fertile window?+
The fertile window is the 6-day window during which conception is possible: the 5 days leading up to ovulation, plus the day of ovulation itself. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days, so intercourse even 5 days before ovulation can result in pregnancy. The two most fertile days are the day before ovulation and ovulation day itself, when conception rates are highest (25–30%).
How accurate is this calculator?+
This calculator is accurate for women with regular cycles. It assumes ovulation occurs exactly 14 days before the next period, which is true for most — but not all — women. Stress, illness, travel, weight changes, and hormonal fluctuations can shift ovulation. For irregular cycles, methods like tracking basal body temperature (BBT), using ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), or monitoring cervical mucus are more reliable.
What are the physical signs of ovulation?+
Common signs include: (1) Cervical mucus changes to clear, slippery, egg-white consistency; (2) A slight rise in basal body temperature (BBT) of 0.2–0.5°C, detected with a BBT thermometer; (3) Mild one-sided pelvic pain (mittelschmerz); (4) Slight increase in sex drive; (5) Breast tenderness; (6) Light spotting. Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect the LH surge that precedes ovulation by 24–36 hours and are a reliable confirmation tool.
Can I get pregnant outside the fertile window?+
It is very unlikely but not impossible. The egg survives for only 12–24 hours after ovulation. If intercourse occurs after the egg has degenerated, conception is essentially impossible for that cycle. However, because ovulation timing can be unpredictable, the ‘safe’ days around periods are not reliably safe. For contraception, use medically approved methods rather than relying on cycle-based calculations.
What if my cycle is irregular?+
This calculator works best with regular cycles of 21–45 days. For irregular cycles: (1) Track your cycle length for 3–6 months and use the average; (2) Use ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) for real-time LH surge detection; (3) Monitor basal body temperature daily; (4) Consult a gynecologist if cycles vary by more than 7–9 days from month to month, as this may indicate hormonal conditions like PCOS.
How many days before my period do I ovulate?+
Ovulation consistently occurs 14 days before the next expected period — the luteal phase (from ovulation to next period) is almost always 14 days, regardless of cycle length. Only the follicular phase (from period start to ovulation) varies. For a 28-day cycle: ovulation on day 14. For a 35-day cycle: ovulation on day 21 (35 − 14 = 21). For a 24-day cycle: ovulation on day 10 (24 − 14 = 10).
What is the difference between ovulation date and fertility window?+
The ovulation date is the single day when an egg is released and viable for 12–24 hours. The fertile window is broader — the 5 days before ovulation (when sperm can survive waiting) plus ovulation day itself = 6 days total. The most fertile days are the 2 days immediately preceding ovulation and ovulation day itself, with conception chances of 25–30% per day.
Can I use this calculator to avoid pregnancy?+
This calculator is for informational purposes and is NOT a contraception method. The rhythm method (calendar-based contraception) has a typical-use failure rate of 24% — meaning about 1 in 4 women relying on it alone will become pregnant within a year. Ovulation timing can shift due to stress, illness, or hormonal changes. For reliable contraception, use medically approved methods and consult your doctor.
What is PCOS and how does it affect ovulation?+
PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) is a hormonal disorder affecting ~1 in 10 women of reproductive age. It causes irregular or absent ovulation because elevated androgens and insulin resistance disrupt the hormonal signals needed to trigger ovulation. Women with PCOS may have cycles ranging from 21 to 90+ days, or no period at all. This calculator is less reliable for PCOS — ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) and medical guidance are recommended.
